Hair Trends Winter 2013 2014 - Interview with Yoko Hisatomi Lane

It is that time of the year again... the time when we have to start thinking about our look for the new season. Hair styles change, we know that, but there is never a clear break from the previous season's trends, it is instead more a smooth transition from one season's trends to another season's trends. For this reason it is important to know what is happening, what is changing, what is new. We are talking about hair trends, hair lengths, hair colors.

We will discuss about all this and more in this interview with Yoko Hisatomi-Lane, owner of Sozo Hair Design in Central, Hong Kong. Yoko is Japanese, born and raised in Tokyo. Growing up in a city famous for its cutting-edge style, she developed an interest in fashion and style at an early age. Upon completing her high school studies she opted to pursue her dream to work in the industry by attending a renowned Tokyo hairdressing school.

Upon completing her course, Yoko perfected her craft at a trendy inner-city Tokyo salon. Seeking international experience Yoko ventured outside Tokyo spending 15 months in a Sydney salon before settling in Hong Kong with Toni&Guy where she spent four years. During her time with Toni&Guy, Yoko's skill and style, were employed on numerous occasions for magazine photo shoots and for the Hong Kong Fashion Week. Seeking to create her own concept and style, Yoko opened her own salon, Sozo Hair Design, in Central, Hong Kong, in January 2013. Sozo focuses on delivering high quality cuts and teaching clients how to style and care for their hair.

Let's start talking about the new hair trends. What do you see coming for the Winter 2013 2014 season?
I see a few different hair trends and looks coming for the next season. One is a wet look. And another one is more like a 'messy stuff' look. The colors are now very strong. When I say strong I mean purple or green, or half and half.

STRONG HAIR COLORS FOR WINTER 2013 2014

These are quite extreme trends, not always suitable for the life of every day at the office, or at school. Are you already doing this in the salon?
Sometimes I get this type of requests, but most of the people here in Hong Kong and especially here in Central are office workers so it is difficult. If you want to be up to date with the latest hair trends, then these new haircuts and colors are not very suitable to the office. But if I could, if there was not this limit, I would certainly advice my clients to try and follow these new hair trends. I would suggest to try different lenghts, different colors. But Central is a very conservative area.

GREEN HAIR COLORS ARE TRENDY

But if a girl, or a woman, is an office worker but she still wants a young and trendy hair style, what would you suggest?
We have a temporary color product. You can use it during the weekend. We sell it a lot. It is a powder, a colored powder. First you put spray or wax on your hair, and then you put it in your hair. You can do half-half or just the ends. You can actually recreate the "ombre hair" trend if you want. This is a good option for people working in the office.

Are there some trends from the previous seasons we are still going to see this winter?
Yes, the colors come from the previous seasons. Colors such as the strong purple for example.

What about hair lenghts?
The hair length depends on the person. Many celebrities start to have short hair now, but long hair is still very popular.

BOTH SHORT AND LONG HAIR ARE IN THE TREND FOR THIS SEASON

Who inspires you?
Recently I get inspiration and ideas from Rihanna's new hair look. She cut her hair very short. It is very nice, with a fringe. Fringes are very popular too. The fringe is thick but with a little but texture, softer, with movement.

What about the streetstyle? What do you see on the streets of Hong Kong which inspires you?
I saw a girl with ash color (grey) hair. She had very long hair. It was very nice to see, a very strong look.

Let's talk about the hair styles you see going quickly out of fashion, the style we should forget about from now on...
The heavy bob style is now out, in my opinion. I like the bob length but it shouldn't be a straight bob. It should now have a little bit more movement.

THE HEAVY BOB IS OUT, THE WAVY BOB IS IN

...and also the girls used to shave underneath, I think it is now kind of out of fashion...

...AND THIS LOOK IS OUT!

Let's talk about products. What are the must have products for this season?
Powder. To make your hair look messy. Especially western hair is very easy to lose volume and become flat, so this powder gives more body to the hair. It is useful to make it messy, to give your hair more body. It is especially suitable for fine hair.

ON THE LEFT: A NEW WAY TO ADD TEMPORARY COLOR TO YOUR HAIR, ON THE RIGHT: YOKO'S FAVORITE PRODUCT TO GIVE A MATTE TEXTURE TO THE HAIR

Also this one is very nice, it is called Milbon Nigelle Mat Scrunch Foam. It gives your hair texture. It is like a mousse but gives a matte texture to the hair. It is very useful when you want a messy look, and for mid length hair. This product is from Japan.
